Jordan Rally -Thrown into a new experience-

As the Jordan Rally was held in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for the first time, none of us had enough knowledge about the region before we arrived there. This Arabian country, in Southwest Asia, is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the northeast, Israel and the West Bank to the west, and Saudi Arabia to the east and south. It shares, with Israel, the coastlines of the Dead Sea, also the Gulf of Aqaba with Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. All these border lines add up to 1,619 km.

As soon as the service trucks arrived in Aqaba, we set the wheels in motion. Aqaba is a town on the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba. The distance between Aqaba and the Dead Sea Center, the location of the rally's Head Quarters (HQ) and the service park, was about 300km.

Jordan consists of an arid desert plateau in the east, irrigated by Oasis and a seasonal water stream, with Highland area to the west consisting of arable land and Mediterranean evergreen forestry. The Great Rift Valley of the Jordan River separates Jordan, the west bank and Israel. The highest point in the country is Jabal Ram, it is 1,734 m above sea level, while the lowest is the Dead Sea -420 m.
The organizer scraped down a hill slope by the Dead Sea and rolled flat to form the service park. We could see nothing but desert and the lake around us. On the other hand, the hotel where we stayed was also situated on the slope overlooking the Dead Sea and was like an oasis in the area.

We enjoyed many attractions such as band music and drumming during the rally days in the service park. The air was filled with a boisterous atmosphere. Military vehicles were displayed at a booth by the Jordanian Armed Forces.

On Day3, just after P-G decided to retire from the rally, His Majesty King Abdullah II came to visit us. The entire team was delighted to have such a special guest! Both Toni and P-G was especially delighted to have the opportunity of having a chat with the King.

We experienced some of the typical Arab cultures. While P-G wore the Arab dress at the party, Toni took a belly-dance lesson. Tomi, the co-driver of Toni, enjoyed bathing at the Dead Sea. He studied the pace note floating on the saline lake! Anyone can easily float in the Dead Sea because of natural buoyancy. The Dead Sea is 67 km long and 18 km wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. In Arabic the Dead Sea is called "the Sea of Lot". The Greeks called it Lake Asphaltites. As stated above, it is 420m below sea level, and its shores are the lowest point on the surface of the Earth on dry land. It is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean, and it is also the world's second saltiest body of water. Its salt and clay from the bottom of the lake are often used for cosmetic purposes.

For your information, here are some images of Arab cuisine. Hummus is a dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini; made of hulled, lightly roasted sesame seeds, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Hummus is a popular food in various local forms throughout the Middle Eastern world. If you were hungry in the service park, you can find stands selling Shawarma, which is a Middle Eastern-style sandwich, usually composed of shaved lamb or chicken. It is a popular fast-food across the Middle East, and is consumed across the rest of the world as well. For a snack, if you like dried fruits, how about dates? Dates are an important traditional crop in Arab countries and North Africa and are mentioned in many places in the Quran. In Islamic countries, dates and yogurt or sometimes milk are a traditional first meal when the sun sets during Ramadan.

Well, we've almost come to the end of our story. On a final note, I would like to tell you about Al Khazneh, "The Treasury" in the ancient city of Petra. You can visit there after traveling 255km on a bus from Amman, then 2km on a horse or a camel and on foot for 30minute. It is one of the world's seven wonders that have classical Roman-influenced architecture carved in the red rock. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from a legend that bandits hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Petra has appeared in many Hollywood movies, but has gained more fame in the 1989 film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

The sunset on Day3 was really beautiful. After staying there for a week, we found that Jordan was fantastic and definitely a country worth visiting country. However, all of us know that tomorrow is a new day and our minds have already switched to the Rally Italia Sardinia.
